Mobile Device Management (MDM) for Industrial Environments

What is MDM Software?

Mobile Device Management (MDM) software is an essential tool for managing multiple mobile computers deployed in a manufacturing or distribution environment.

MDM software allows IT administrators to manage and configure mobile devices from one central location. The MDM web application interface includes the ability to remotely configure settings, install or update new firmware and applications, and manage device policies. With MDM, gone are the days of on-site visits to update devices. There is no need to incur the extra costs and downtime when transporting mobile devices to a central location for a refresh process. Mobile computers can stay in place and in use, while administrators make updates as needed.

Managing Multiple Sites with MDM Software

MDM is especially useful in multi-site applications. Administrators can remotely monitor the devices in real-time, track their location, and gather performance data on each mobile computer. They can diagnose and troubleshoot problems, then apply fixes remotely, further reducing the need for on-site visits and minimizing downtime.

AML Setup™, a companion software to AML Device Manager™, is also useful when deploying devices at multiple sites. AML Setup allows IT administrators to remotely set up all the device configurations using AML Setup Console™ an easy-to-use desktop interface. These configurations include setting up Wi-Fi, the default home application, audio/display settings, and more. Once all the settings are adjusted, AML Setup Console generates a barcode that can be scanned on all mobile computers to complete the configuration. IT Administrators may use AML Device Manager to make additional updates on licensed devices without having to scan a new configuration barcode.

AML Device Manager Takes MDM to the Next Level

More advanced MDM software tools, like AML Device Manager, have additional features such as the ability for two-way messaging, allowing the administrator to communicate directly with the device user. For support purposes, IT Administrators can remotely take control of the device and make necessary changes. And a “Find my Device” feature allows the administrator to activate audible and visible alarms on the device, making it easier to locate in that remote corner of the warehouse.

Mobile device management software can save enormous amounts of time remotely configuring and provisioning devices. The ability to track and monitor mobile devices in the field ensures better asset management and also mitigates loss and/or theft. Not having to send support techs to the review the devices in person, or vice versa, is a huge cost savings and frees up resources for more important tasks, allowing all departments the ability to do the jobs they were meant to do.
