Warehousing and Distribution
The Benefits of a Warehouse Barcode System
In today’s fast-paced modern era of warehousing, with inventory moving in and out with greater frequency, automated data capture based on barcode scanning is crucial to maintaining accuracy and speed. Barcodes are a quick and accurate way to identify items so inventory tracking software can automatically update inventory records in real time. With barcode scanning, virtually every aspect of handling the inventory is faster and less prone to mistakes. Fulfilling orders, the process of picking and packing items, is much faster with far fewer errors than with manual systems. Counting inventory, such as cycle counts, is completed in a fraction of the time as compared to the old days of “tagging inventory”. Receiving, moving, staging, and shipping are all done with a few quick scans in most operations.
The combination of barcode scanning and inventory control software, or a “warehouse management system” gives users throughout the enterprise, big or small, immediate, real-time visibility into inventory. When it was received, where it was stored, how much of it is committed, and how much is available. This information becomes available quite literally at the speed of a barcode scan. Inventory-related decisions are made much faster and with a higher degree of accuracy and confidence.

Choosing the Right Barcode Scanning Mobile Computer
The most important thing when selecting a mobile computer is to look around and honestly assess the environment. Most warehouse facilities have concrete floors and moving forklifts, with lots of ways for a handheld computer to become damaged. They will generally get treated like box knives. If this is an adequate description of the workplace, then the only logical choice is to go with a rugged device. Choose a mobile computer designed to survive drops onto concrete floors, a wide range of temperatures, sealed from dirt, dust and grime, and preferably a long battery life, enough to last a full shift.
Next assess the application. Are most of your scans close-up, within a foot or two? Or further away like 2 or 3 racks up? Will you always be scanning one-dimensional barcodes (1D) like UPC or Code 39 codes? Or might you be scanning two-dimensional barcodes (2D) like Data Matrix or QR codes? Be careful to choose a mobile computer with the right integrated barcode scanner.
Would your users prefer a pistol-grip style handle? Or no handle at all, like a smartphone? Pay attention to details like the weight, the keypad layout, and the screen size.
Things NOT to Do When Sourcing Rugged Mobile Computers
Consumer-grade devices
Don’t choose consumer grade devices. They aren’t made with long-life industrial components. They weren’t designed to be used all day, every day. They’re fragile. They won’t last long and they aren’t as inexpensive as you might think. The strategy of “replace them when they break” can turn into a costly nightmare.
Touchscreen Only
Don’t choose touchscreen-only devices. If your users need to key data like quantities or locations, or any other data not scanned, get them a device with a keypad. Touchscreens are notorious for typing errors. Why else would we need error-correction software on our smartphones? Think about it.
No Warranty
Don’t pass on the extended warranties. You’re dealing with expensive assets that will get dropped, thrown, sat on, ran over, and everything else imaginable. The extended warranty is essentially an insurance policy that covers abuse.
The Safe Bet for Mobile Computers for the Warehouse
Android®. It’s the only sure bet. Android has replaced Microsoft as the operating system of choice for commercial and industrial devices. Because it is open source, developers have flocked to it and today most contemporary inventory control software packages offer an Android app, or APK. It has opened the door for mobile computer manufacturers, like AML, to develop Android apps that provide additional functionality to speed device deployment and improve the user experience. At AML, we equip our mobile computers with built-in terminal emulation clients and web browsers, as well as utilities for rapidly configuring and deploying devices in one location, or across many locations. Our devices can easily connect with legacy programs using telnet clients, or contemporary cloud-based systems using the web browser or a dedicated Android app (APK).
